Bicycles
A small number of bicycles can usually be accepted on flights. The pedals must be removed, tyre pressures lowered, handlebars turned in line with the frame and all oily parts must be covered. A cycle box or bag is recommended for carriage, as this will prevent the most common form of damage, which is to wheel spokes. Arrangements should be made with the airline at the time of booking. It is advised that separate insurance be purchased for the full replacement value of the bicycle.
Golf clubs can be carried as hold baggage provided that the clubs are secured in an appropriate golf travel bag.
Sharp Items In Hand Baggage
Items that are not allowed to be carried in hand luggage on the aircraft include: toy or replica guns; knives – including penknives and household knives; catapults; household cutlery; corkscrews; razor blades; tradesmen’s tools, darts, scissors with blades over 3cm; knitting needles; sporting bats; billiard, snooker or pool cues; hypodermic needles (unless required for medical reasons). This list is under continual review.
Musical Instruments
Most airlines will allow small musical instruments such as flutes, clarinets and violins to be carried aboard the aircraft provided they are properly packed as part of the passenger’s hand baggage. The carriage of larger instruments normally requires prior permission from the carrier as regards hold storage and insurance cover.
It will be the responsibility of the customer to ensure it is packed in a manner to avoid damage.
Fragile Equipment
Fragile items can be carried provided they are adequately packed to prevent damage and labelled as such. These will normally be loaded in the hold but if they are of the correct proportions they may be carried into the cabin. However, in the event of loss or damage, the airline may refuse to take liability for such items.
